Message Dissemination During a Crisis: How to build a game plan your library’s brand can survive

Libraries are faced with unique challenges in a 24-hour news cycle world. While the corporate sector has extensive business continuity plans in place, far fewer libraries have up-to-date crisis communication strategies and plans developed in order to protect their brand in a sudden emergency. Libraries must be ready to communicate quickly about any crisis impacting their reputation. Effective crisis management in the new media era is defined not only by the message, but by the speed with which it is delivered. And a single misstep in the moments following a crisis can prove detrimental to the brand. A crisis rarely comes announced and will always leave an impact on a library’s reputation. It is essential that communications are handled effectively during and in the aftermath of a crisis. This workshop will offer practical strategies that will help library staff develop and implement a crisis communications plan for major, minor and emerging crises.
