Library Metadata at a Crossroads: Leveraging our Traditional Strengths in New Ways
Library workers have created, improved, and used metadata for decades longer than most other professions. Rapid shifts in how the rest of the world works with metadata, though, have presented libraries with interesting opportunities and important challenges. Beyond cataloging expertise, libraries now need professionals who can perform a wide variety of technical tasks associated with data management. In this presentation, OCLC staff will discuss how these changes affect library workers and present a variety of resources for those looking to increase their own understanding. From original research on the future of metadata, to the OCLC Community Center, to the new WMS sandbox available to ALA Core members, there are many ways to get a handle on new information and support.
