An Introduction to Wikibase with the LD4 Wikibase Working Hour

This session aims to provide a broad introduction to the use of Wikibase in the library and archives sector, and to the activities of the LD4 community Wikibase Working Hour, which since 2021 has offered programming on Wikibase geared toward a library audience. The presenters will address the following questions:

  • What Wikibase is, and how is it related to Wikidata, Wikipedia, and other Wiki-projects
  • What kinds of diverse and interconnected projects libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) are undertaking using Wikibase
  • How librarians can get started using Wikibase
  • How WBStack and its successor Wikibase Cloud, which offer “Wikibase as a service,” can help lower barriers to Wikibase experimentation for librarians

The session will also demonstrate the use of a Wikibase instance, created by the LD4 Wikibase Working Hour using WBStack in 2021. The demonstration will include a general overview of Wikibase administration, creating and editing items and properties, using the Wikibase query service, and using OpenRefine integrations with Wikibase instances.
